How do we win recruits against UT?
we're not going to. a vb recruiting class is typically only 3-5 girls, and they are fighting for the elite. we're just not going to overlap. vb mag:

This year [2017], the top five are Texas, Wisconsin, UCLA, Minnesota and Kentucky.
Stanford, Oregon, USC, North Carolina and Texas had the top five positions in 2016.
in the last 10yrs, texas has been to 8 final fours, won 1 title, and finished 2nd 3 times.
that said, i'll argue that if emily was their setter, they'd be the 4 seed (at least) and hosting next weekend instead of going to provo.

How do we get over this hump?
it's not going to be by going through austin - as of tonight, they have made the sweet 16 thirteen years in a row. we have to host our own regional. get our rpi up into the early teens. we're close - just need to schedule a bit tougher, and win a couple more matches -- and i think that's doable w/ these young studs we've got for the next 3 years. i wonder what our rpi would have been if we'd have taken that lsu match, or heck, the kentucky one when they were coming off the ut match the night before. certainly don't think coach is afraid of scheduling those matches, but that likely means inviting tougher teams for our home tournament, which is definitely a risk.
mid-majors that hosted this year w/ rpi (not tourney seed):
5 byu - plays 34 utah next [byu won]
10 ucf - lost to 47 fgcu 1st rd
13 creighton - plays 25 washington next [lost to uw]
15 marquette - plays 24 cincinnnati next [marquette won]
other top 30 rpi mid-majors, for context:
16 uni lost to 35 pepperdine, who lost to 6 wisconsin
23 cal poly lost to 53 san diego who plays 9 usc next [usd won]
28 dayton lost to 37 louisville
29 illinois state lost to 24 cincinnati
30 rice lost to 22 txst
