Post Game Thread - @ Texas Arlington
TXST is on the road for the 3rd straight game and will be trying to run it's win streak to 4 straight in Arlington today vs. the rival UTA Mavericks at 4:30pm.

The Bobcats are coming off a road sweep of Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State last week. UTA faced the exact same road trip last week and went 1-1, winning at App State but losing at Coastal. The Mavericks and Bobcats are tied for 4th in the standings, both at 6-3, and only 1 game back of the leaders who are tied at 7-2.

UTA has the best overall resume in the Sun Belt however with a 16-6 overall record and a top 60 RPI. They went 10-3 in non-conference play with wins over Texas, North Texas, and their best win over a ranked St. Mary's team at St. Mary's. They are also 8-0 in Arlington this year, including 4-0 vs. the Sun Belt. They are winning at home by an average of more than 22 points per game and no Sun Belt team has kept it within 15 points at the College Park Center. They are extremely difficult to beat at home. TXST has never beaten them at the College Park Center since it was opened in 2012 and haven't beaten UTA in Arlington since 2010.

This will be the 2nd meeting of the season vs. these teams as TXST beat UTA back on January 7th in San Marcos in what is likely TXST's best win of the season. TXST's leaders had a great game vs. the Mavericks with Tilbury scoring 21, Black scoring 16, Pearson scoring 14, and Conley adding 11. Mavericks star Kevin Hervey scored 25 in the loss.

The NBA prospect Hervey is the most dangerous player on UTA's squad. Hervey leads the Mavs in both scoring and rebounding with 16.3 PPG and 8.0 RPG. Expect to see Hervey and Tilbury go head to head today. Shutting down PG Erick Neal is also key to shutting down the Mavs offense. Neal averages 10 PPG and also averages 6.7 assists per game (7th in the country). SG Jalen Jones is also dangerous as he averages 12.9 PPG and shoots over 35% from 3. Expect Black to guard Neal and Conley to take on Jones.

The game will be televised if you have Spectrum (Time Warner) on the Spectrum Sports Channel (Channel 323). UTA currently favored by 10. It's been as high as 11.5.

8-8 at first media timeout.

Black 2/2 from 3 and a nice dish to King for an easy layup.

21-10 UTA. I have a feeling this one could get ugly.

39-30 UTA at halftime. Other than that early lull where we fell behind early when UTA was hitting everything we didn't have a bad half.

Bilbao is overpowering us down low. We really need to recruit a more physical presence in the front court.

Game went about as expected, with the exception of the foul trouble for most of our starters throughout the game. Hervey would easily be a first round pick this year if he didn't take so many plays "off".

And you base this on?

Almost every NBA team have been down to see him multiple times. Even the announcers during the game kept saying with one more year of polishing he would be a lock for the first round.

Hervey will probably have the opportunity for a NBA career, but 1st round? That's a big nope in my book. There isn't a player in the 'Belt that rises to first round status. There are too many better mid-major and major conference forwards in his anticipated draft class, not even accounting for international. He needs to work on his on-the-ball defense as well.

He needs to stop taking plays off, or he will have no NBA career. He was pretty on-point against us, but that has not been the case in other games for him. NBA teams are increasingly resistant to taking players with raw talent but with significant entitlement/laziness. Cross needs to start riding his ass about it--he owes it to his player to put him on notice about the importance of maturity in facilitating a transition to the NBA.

Back to the game though... UTA came out focused. That is what mature teams do when they get beat unexpectedly earlier in the season by a TxSt team showing signs of life. The narrative of our loss is nothing new (except this time we added a dose of poor interior defense to our poor perimeter defense), particularly against a clearly superior team, so no sense rehashing it.

The NBA draft is somewhat of a hobby of mine. I follow the scouting very closely. Hervey ranks somewhere around 35 to 50 amongst juniors. I can tell you with 100% certainty he wouldn't be drafted this year in the 1st or 2nd round. For the 2018 draft...as a SBC player, he would need VAST improvement next year (ESPECIALLY in his 3 point shooting) to overcome being a 22 year old senior going up against 19 & 20 year old phenoms, well rounded seniors that can contribute as role players right away, and draft and stash euro players who save cap space.

He doesn't have one skill that sticks out that he EXCELS at that can make him a solid role player in the NBA. He is a good college basketball player though.
